The right balance
Three measurements to help you choose your frame. A pair you already find comfortable is a useful point of comparison.
Read your frame.
Look inside one of the temples: you will usually find three numbers. They refer to measurements in millimetres.
55 · 17 · 145
An example of how to read the numbers, not the measurements of a particular model.
Schematic illustrations, not to scale.
55 mm
Lens width
The horizontal width of one lens, not the width of the entire frame.
17 mm
Bridge width
The distance between the two lenses at the nose.
145 mm
Temple length
The length of the temple, including the part that extends behind the ear.
These three numbers do not directly give the total width of the frame. Its shape and the way it rests on your nose also affect the fit.
Your current pair, your best reference.
A few simple steps to compare measurements before choosing.
Note the measurements
Write down the three numbers printed inside a temple of your current pair.
Compare the dimensions
Find the measurements in the details of the frame you are interested in, then compare each one.
Refine your choice
Consider the shape and how it rests on your nose. Similar measurements do not guarantee an identical fit.
The details that matter.
What does the small square between the numbers mean?
The small square sometimes placed between the first two numbers is a separator. The measurements are still expressed in millimetres.
Do the same measurements mean the same fit?
Not necessarily. The frame’s shape and how it rests on your nose also play a part. Use the measurements as a point of comparison.
